povertyTitle: The powerlessness of one. As I continue to explore visual art as a means of my own personal expression it awakens or introduces me to a part of myself I have ignored or not felt confident expressing in a verbal context. Each painting, each study of an artist or a medium awakens something new deep within and gives me an alternative way of voicing personal opinion. As I slowly unravel why I have suffered at times by severe depression and alcohol abuse artistic expression gives me the confidence to voice things that in the past I have kept silent.

The message has been asked by me both outwardly and inwardly since an early age. I don't get it, I don't get our denial, our ability to sweep it away, while we go on consuming, I truly don't get how as a society we live the way we do while children such as this are dying. Don't worry I am not finger pointing as I am a guilty as the next, more so because of my constant awareness.

What I have seen for most of my life isn't pretty and is basically totally insane. Our western society is structured not too think about the poor but to think about our own over excessive gluttony. This is not balanced, the shear weight of ignorace makes it near impossible to continually speak of such things, it falls on deaf ears. We as a society have turned our backs, become indifferent, relied on satisfying our own endless wants. The thing I need to do is work out how I will make a difference, fuck all the zombies and their consumerised little worlds, what can I do to shift the balance?

I found a saying that speaks to me in a way that helps me pull my head out of my ass and for once feel confident that somehow, somewhere I can make a drop in the gigantic death bucket that we 'westerners' have and are still creating by our ignorant over consumption.

Re-direct your anger into positive action. Convert your fear into excitement. Stand tall on your principles. And don’t forget to have fun! — Randy Schutt, Inciting Democracy

Each and every one of us at some time in their life has asked themselves how can we help the poor in developing nations.? The standard answer is that we can send small tokens of money, or allow our government to make token payments on our behalf, we have no other way of helping, the choices that we can make are quite limited. So we put the poor out of our minds and continue on......... the fact is we are not able to save the dying because we refuse to embrace any changes to our own lifestyles. We continue to consume and live the lives we do because we are living off the backs of the dying, the poor, buying (stealing) their share of global resources to maintain our over indulgent lifestyles.

I realise that we dont intentionally do this, our society is structured as such that we do not question such things, yet we do consume and waste so much just to satisfy a human need. It just seems to me way off balance when I can go and buy whatever shit I want yet on the otherhand I cannot do that without having someone else poor and destitute.

So do you over consume and take other peoples resources contributing to their deaths? If you said no, you are a fucking liar or like so many are in denial, not willing to even comprehend what I am trying to explain.

Here are some figures that most Westerners would not know or are indifferent to.

To maintain the great lifestyle we have here in Australia and throughout the Western World, we will have to plunge more and more people below the poverty line in the countries of the Developing world. If everyone on this planet was to live like we do we would need at least 6 more planets with the same resources as Earth to achieve this. So what does that mean?

We are consuming more than what the planet can regenerate, it means that to maintain our lifestyle in the West, we will have to create more poverty in the less developed nations and purchase (steal) their share of limited resources. And that’s what we do every single year. There’s no other way.

As a direct result of our over consumption, every 3.6 seconds, another person dies of starvation in the world? Fucking 20,000 children die each day because of our over consumption. they only die because they are poor, and they are poor only because we are rich and we can buy their share of resources to maintain our lifestyles.
